Day 4 was probably our favorite stop, Izmir Turkey. We took an excursion to Ephesus, where we visited Fortress of Selcuk, and the church of Saint John, considered to be the most important Byzantine building in Ephesus. Justinian and the Queen Teodora had the Basilica built in the 6th Century A.D. on the ruins of a small church, on the tomb of St. John, who died in Ephesus in 100 A.D. What was amazing is that everyone is allowed to just climb over everything and explore. A child's paradise!
We then headed to the House of the Virgin Mary, declared a pilgrimage place in 1892. Mary lived in a house on the Bulbul Mountain in Ephesus for 46 years, which was forgotten up until 200 years ago. Isabella was a bit surprised that it wasn't more grand. It was a great learning experience! The area that the house is in is in a large wooded area set on a mountain overlooking Ephesus. It was an incredibly peaceful setting. We ended our time their with a typical Turkish tea.
